NPS climate change response has primarily focused on understanding climate change impacts to natural resources. NPS cultural resources managers are working to understand the potential impacts to cultural resources, which have their own unique sets of issues. Cultural resources are unique, irreplaceable, and once lost, they are lost forever. If moved or altered, they may lose context, significance and meaning. NPS cultural resource management planning for climate change is based on two tenants: (1) Cultural resources are primary sources of data regarding human interactions with environmental change; and , (2) changing climates affect cultural resource preservation and maintenance. Case studies of managing Acadia's nationally significant cultural resources affected by a changing climate are illustrated.
