Report on collections of tardigrades, mostly from SW Virginia, but including 3 from GRSM, including taxonomy, keys, and drawings. From 434 moss and lichen samples, 694 specimens of tardigrades were collected. These were obtained primarily from the Southwestern Virginia counties of Giles, Craig, Montgomery, and Grayson. Anatomical studies carried out on these specimens revealed that representatives of two classes, three orders, four families, eight genera and twenty-six species of the Phylum Tardigrada were present. An anatomical description of each of the twenty-six species was presented together with a discussion of the systematic position and the recent collection records for each species. Evidence was presented for the assignment of phylum rank to the Tardigrada and necessary taxonomic revisions were established to carry out this elevation.
