This Natural Resource Data Series Report (NRDS) presents data collected from anchialine pools associated with the Pu`uhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park (PUHO) on the west coast of the island of Hawai`i, Hawaii. This is a summary or “data report” as described in the Water Quality Vital Signs Monitoring Protocol for the Pacific Island Network Version 1.0, Natural Resource Report NPS/PACN/NRR-2011/418. This report is restricted to data presentation and limited description. The data presented in this report will be analyzed for the establishment of expected parameter value ranges and long-term trends in future reports published in the NPS Natural Resource Technical Report (NRTR) series. The purpose of collecting data on Vital Signs is to provide park managers information on current conditions and temporal trends in ecosystem health. Five anchialine pools in Pu`uhonua o Hōnaunau NHP were sampled quarterly from the last quarter of 2007 through 2011. During this time no major ecological events were detected in pools. Relatively minor algal blooms may have occurred in February 2011 in FPUHO03_ap, FPUHO04_ap, and FPUHO05_ap, as indicated by elevated chlorophyll concentrations. Later, a tsunami hit Hawaii on March 11, 2011, which inundated anchialine pools with seawater along the Kona coast, including FPUHO03_ap, FPUHO04_ap, and FPUHO05_ap. Pools were sampled 16 days later, but there were no residual effects in pool chemistry.
