This Natural Resource Data Series Report (NRDS) presents data collected from Waikolu Stream in Kalaupapa National Historical Park on the northern coast of the island of Moloka’i, Hawaii. This is a summary or “data report” as described in the Water Quality Vital Signs Monitoring Protocol for the Pacific Island Network Version 1.0, Natural Resource Report NPS/PACN/NRR-2011/418. This report is restricted to data presentation and limited description. The data presented in this report will be analyzed for the establishment of expected parameter value ranges and long-term trends in future reports published in the NPS Natural Resource Technical Report (NRTR) series. The purpose of collecting data on Vital Signs is to provide park managers information on current conditions and temporal trends in ecosystem health. Waikoloa Stream regularly exceeded state water quality criteria. Because dissolved nutrient concentrations do not include particulate nutrient concentrations, total nutrient concentrations, in which state criteria are written, will be higher in the stream. Thus while nutrient levels in the stream exceeded the state TP criteria in the dry seasons of each year based on dissolved nutrients alone, the stream may in fact exceed state criteria at all times due to additional phosphorus in particulate form. Likewise, while TDN did not exceed criteria, the stream may exceed criteria when particulate nitrogen is also considered. The stream exceeded nitrate + nitrate concentrations at all times.
