The Scottish surgeon and botanist Archibald Menzies was 36 years old when the British government appointed him as Naturalist to accompany Captain George Vancouver in the Discovery on a voyage to the northwest coast of America. The portion of Menzies' journal presented in these pages covers twenty days in the spring of 1792, during which Vancouver explored, surveyed and charted Washington's north coast, while Menzies collected specimens and recorded his impressions of the flora and fauna.
