In making a soil survey the soils are examined, classified, and mapped in the field and their characteristics recorded, particularly in regard to the production of crops, grasses, and forests. The soils and the underlying formations are examined systematically in many location. Test pits are dug, borings made, and highway or railroad cuts and other exposures studied. ... The soils are classified according to their characteristics, both internal and external, with special emphasis upon the features that influence the adaptation of the land to the growing of crop plants, grasses, and trees. On the basis of these characteristics the soils are grouped in the following classification units: (1) Series, (2) types, (3) phases, (4) complexes, and (5) miscellaneous land types.
