Chemical mediation of plant-herbivore interactions: A model system with Penstemon and its herbivores

Kelly CA. Chemical mediation of plant-herbivore interactions: A model system with Penstemon and its herbivores. Research Permit and Reporting System

My dissertation research addresses how plant defensive compounds influence the community of herbivores that rely on these plants. To determine the natural variation of defensive compounds to which herbivores are exposed, I collected 15 flowering Penstemon virgatus plants from each of six populations in Colorado in July 2011, including two populations within Rocky Mountain National Park. Plants were harvested and returned to the lab for chemical analysis via gas chromatography.
