Rare Alpine Butterflies in the Olympic Mountains

This is the final report on a two year survey of rare alpine butterflies on the Olympic Peninsula. Initial target species were Polites Sonora siris (Dogstar Skipper) and Oeneis chryxus valerata (Chryxus Arctic). These species are on the Interagency Special Status / Sensitivie Species Program (ISSSSP (USFS / BLM 2014) list assembled by the US Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management. Since the contract was awarded, Plebejus icariodes blackmorei (Puget Blue) and Plebejus lupine spangelatus (Lupine Blue) were added to the ISSSSP list. They were then added to the target list for this survey. .... Butterfly records have been collected in alpine areas of the Olympic Peninsula since the early 1900s. Most records previous to 1995 are represented in Hinchliff (1996). These and subsequent additions now maintained by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) (2012). Information from this WDFW database was the basis for this project. Additional records were collected from lepidopterists who have worked in the area.
