An extensive exploratory trapping program for southern sea bass was conducted in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico by the Marine Research Laboratory of the Florida Department of Natural Resources in 1968. Three trap types were set a total of 540 times, producing 2283 sea bass. Caribbean heart traps were most successful, and deeper waters from the Suwannee River to Carrabelle were most productive. Twenty to forty percent of the trapped sea bass were of marketable size. These yielded approximately 33% by weight after filleting and deboning.
