Saratoga Monument is the smallest of five cultural landscapes that comprise Saratoga National Historical Park in Stillwater, New York. The park preserves the sites of two decisive American Revolutionary War battles between British and American forces in the autumn of 1777. It is widely documented that the American victory at Saratoga changed the momentum of the war, after which crucial support from the French was secured. Commemorative efforts by private citizens commenced shortly after the battles, culminating in the battlefield’s designation as a state-managed property in 1927, and later as a National Historical Park in 1938. The Saratoga Monument commemorates British Lt. General Burgoyne’s surrender to American forces during the Battles of Saratoga in 1777. Located in Victory, New York, the 2.82-acre, rectangular-shaped property was once part of the larger British encampment that occupied the Heights of Saratoga. The dominant landscape feature is the 154-foot-tall obelisk monument, built in 1877-1882. The recently rehabilitated structure is situated on a high bluff, 250 feet above the Hudson River overlooking the surrounding villages, farms, and countryside. From its top may be seen Lake George to the north, the Green Mountains to the east, and the Catskills to the south. Since 1897, the monument has been set within a formal landscape of geometric walks, open lawns, and tree lines. The 1865 Prospect Hill Cemetery, with its complementary tree-lined carriage roads, borders the west side of the monument, while suburban development borders the other sides. An entrance road, parking lot, and restroom are located on leased cemetery land just west of the monument property.
