Ninety tropical acres of outdoor delight for Miami boaters is located eight miles east of Homestead, FL and thirty miles southeast of Miami. Dade County acquired the land running from bay to ocean in 1953-54 from Lewis Adams; a retired northern book manufacturer who had purchased it from the famous botanist Dr. John Gifford. The Metro Dade County Park and Recreation Department began development in 1960, modernizing the harbor and opening its newly built picnic camping facilities to the public. It was an instant success; 13,104, 30,206, 29,727 boaters in its first three years. There is dockage for 25 boats and ample mooring offshore for others. Elliot Key Park is maintained and staffed year round and operated on a first come, first served basis. Camping, drift wood collecting, old bottle hunting, skin-diving, fishing and swimming are its most popular sports.
