Five physiognomic types of mangrove forests are identified on the basis of local geography, coastal position and relationship to terrestrial run off and tidal flushing rates of biomass, by compartment, are reported for an overwash forest, fringe forest, marine forest, a single-tree island and white mangroves (Laguncalaria racemosa) colonizing dredge-spoil banks. Forest biomass (dry weight, above ground) ranges from ? to 25 kgm-2. Standing stock detritus contributes up to 39% of the total mass and is related to storm damage.
