Environmental Sensitivity Index: Virgin Islands. INTRODUCTION: Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) maps have been developed for the marine and coastal areas of the U.S. and British Virgin Islands (USVI and BVI). Black and white scanned images of the U.S. Geological Survey. (USGS) topographic quadrangle maps and topographic maps published by the UK Directorate of Overseas Surveys (UKDOS) are used as a backdrop for the map pages in this atlas. The topographic maps also served as the basemaps upon which most of the data for this project were collected and compiled. The name and date on the bottom right of each map page in this atlas refer to the corresponding topographic map name and its publication or latest photorevision date. APPROPRIATE USE OF ATLAS AND DATA: This atlas and the associated GIS database were developed to provide summary information on sensitive natural and human-use resources for the purposes of oil and chemical spill planning and response. Although the atlas and database should be very useful for other environmental and natural resource planning purposes, it should not be used in place of data held by the USVI DPNR, BVI CFD, USFWS, NPS, USGS-BRD, NMFS, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, USEP A, the VI CDC, the USVI State Historic Preservation Office, or other agencies or organizations. Likewise, information contained in the atlas and database cannot be used in place of consultations with natural and cultural resource agencies, or in place of field surveys. Also, this atlas should not be used for navigation. Information shown on the maps and in the database represents known concentration areas or occurrences for natural, cultural, and human-use resources, but does not necessarily represent the full distribution or range of each species or resource. This is particularly important to recognize when considering potential impacts to protected species and resources, such as endangered species, wetlands, archaeological sites, etc.
