Reef corals exist over a strong depth-mediated light gradient spanning at least two orders of magnitude; many species are present at all depths along this gradient. Mechanisms of photoadaptation to these extremes were determined for the massive Caribbean reef-building coral Montastrea annularis from 1 m, 10 m, and 30 m on a Jamaican fore-reef using an in situ respirometer.
