The Shallow-Water Hermit Crabs of Florida

Provenzano AJ. 1959. The Shallow-Water Hermit Crabs of Florida. Bulletin of Marine Science of the Gulf and Caribbean (Bulletin of Marine Science). 9(4):348-420

Twenty-three spp of pagurid crabs from the tidal and immediately subtidal waters of Florida, including one new sp., Pagurus floridanus. are described, illustrated and discussed and keys are presented for their determination. Pagurus floridanus (Benedict) is synonymous with Pagurus pollicaris Say. Both Pagurus po/licaris and Pagurus longicarpus have disjunct ranges, southern Florida separating what arc probably subspecific populations of each. Paguristes anomalus Bouvier, Pagurus pygmaeus (Bouvier), and Pagurus brevidactylus (Stimpson) are reported for the first time from Florida and the U. S.
