The razorfishes, recently classified in the genera Xyrichtys, Novacula, Novaculichthys, Iniistius, and Novaculops are united under one generic name, Hemipteronotus Lacepede. Five Atlantic species are recognized: novacula from the eastem and western Atlantic Ocean (psittacus, lineata, uniocellatus, cultratus, vitta, vermiculatus, argentimaculata, rosipes, and binghami are synonyms); splendens from the Caribbean region and Brazil (ventralis is a synonym); blanchardi, endemic to Ascension; martinicensis from the Caribbean Sea (modestus, venustus, and infirmus are synonyms); and sanctaehelenae from St. Helena and Ascension.
