The Florida snail kite (Rostrhamus sociabilis plumbeus Ridgway), formerly called the Everglade kite, was discovered in . Florida in 1844 (Harris 1844). It was apparently unknown to earlier naturalists including William Bartram and John James Audubon. The Florida snail kite once ranged over the wide expanse of freshwater lakes and marshes throughout peninsular Florida (Figure 1). The species was federally listed as endangered in 1967 and critical habitat was determined in 1977 (Federal Register 42 (155): 40685-40688 (Figure 2). The Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission lists the snail kite as an endangered species and it is listed in CITES, Appendix II. For purposes of clarity, since the species inhabits areas in Florida other than the Everglades, the bird will from here on out be referred to as the Florida snail kite
