This book provides students and others concerned with marine science with a descriptive and ecological account of the marine flora along the west coast of Florida to approximately 70 miles offshore Tampa Bay. For the specific area covered, see p. 4. As an important record of the present marine environment and associated flora, this book will allow comparison with circumstances several years hence. Radical changes in the coastline of Florida are currently being effected through dredge and fill operations and other influences of a rapidly expanding human population. Development of the coastline makes it urgent to investigate existing natural and relatively undisturbed habitats. Sykes (1964) pointed out the problems of dredge and fill operations with relation to destruction of marine habitats and the shrimping industry of Tampa Bay.
