The Genus Bascanichthys (Pisces: Ophichthidae) in the Gulf of Mexico

The taxonomic history of the ophichthid genus Bascanichthys in the west Atlantic is reviewed. Bascanichthys scuticaris is redescribed; B. teres is considered a synonym of B. scuticaris; B. bascanium is redescribed and a neotype is designated. B. scuticaris is distinguished from B. bascanium chiefly by preanai vertebral number (79-89 vs 94-101), pectoral-fin width and head length. The ecology and geographic distribution of the two recognized species are discussed; comments are made on their biology and life histories.
