BELA Landcover- 1996

A 15 class landcover map of the Bering Land Bridge National Preserve and surrounding area produced from Landsat satellite imagery. Through a cooperative agreement, the USGS and the National Park Service produced a landcover map of the Bering Land Bridge National Preserve using digitally processed satellite data to provide baseline information about the nature and extent of landcover resources in the area. A Bayesian classification of two Landsat multispectral (1984) and two Landsat thematic mapper satellite scenes (1992) was used to produce 15 landcover classes. Following a preliminary classification of the data and minimal application of elevation data, scientists visited randomly selected points in the field during 1995 to obtain information about the study area and conduct a comparability assessment of the map using a "fuzzy logic" approach. Field results indicated an initial comparability of 50% using a standard error matrix when comparing field conditions with the map. However, comparability was increased to 74% using a "fuzzy logic" approach. Additional ancillary data (surficial geology, soils, elevation, slope, and illumination) were applied following the field activities to further improve the map. Both soft-copy (digital file) and hard-copy (final paper map) products were generated.
