1. Rates of oxygen consumption of Sabellastarte magnifica and Hermodice carunculata have been studied in relation to various intrinsic and extrinsic factors. 2. Sabellastarte has a higher absolute oxygen consumption for any given body weight than Hermodice. 3. Both species are conformers below the point of air saturation. 4. Sabellastarte and Hermodice are stenohaline and consume less oxygen in dilute sea water. 5. Their rates of oxygen uptake rise and fall with increased and decreased temperature respectively. 6. It is postulated that the day and night variations in the rates of metabolism of Sabellastarte and Hermodice confirm the existence of diurnal activity rhythms in these animals.
