Gonyaulax balechii sp. nov. (Dinophyceae) is described and compared with its closest relatives, Alexandrium minutum Halim and Heteraulacus reticulatus comb. nov. The species is distinctive in its body sculpture and plate pattern. The Gonyaulax "Catenella Group" is also described and discussed. Problems in the taxonomy of the closely allied genera Gonyaulax and Heteraulacus are outlined.
