Spontaneous electrical activity has been recorded with suction electrodes from polyps of the fire coral Millepora complanata (de Kruijf, 1976). Two types of pulses could be distinguished, contraction pulses (CPs) associated with contraction of the polyp and small positive pulses (PPs) not associated with any overt behaviour. CPs are intimately associated with the PPs but the latter can occur without being followed by a contraction pulse. There is evidence for a gastrozooid conducting system and a dactylozooid conducting system (de Kruijf, 1975, 1976). Both systems are of decremental nature and are clearly linked. In this report the results are described concerning experiments with Millepora complanata colonies using electrical stimulation and some drugs. These findings are related to earlier observations.
