Recent studies indicate that marine turtles may be capable of oriented open-sea travel comparable to that of the classic animal navigators. Because of the large size and slow travel speeds of sea turtles, and of their easy manipulability at young stages, they lend themselves to various kinds of orientation testing, both in the field and in the laboratory. Much, however, remains to be learned of the ecological geography of all the five genera, and especially of the routes and scheduling of their high-seas travel. Obviously a thorough understanding of the character of the guidance feat of the animal in nature must precede any analysis of the orientation responses that operate during each stage of a long migratory journey. Marine turtles seem peculiarly promising as subjects for field tests in which whole migratory courses are traced out under natural conditions.
