Tropical benthic communities are among the most productive areas known. Gross photosynthesis generally ranges from one to 24 gC/M^2/day and net photosynthesis to respiration ratios from .5 to 3.6. Undoubtedly such estimates of photosynthesis and respiration vary considerably with the methods used for their determination and in calculations of daily and yearly estimates of productivity. Presented here are some methods for determining benthic productivity, precautions to be considered, and a discussion of the interpretation of results. The methods described are based on oxygen changes produced by photosynthesis and respiration.
