The Dungeness Mansion Cultural Landscape Inventory (CLI) documents the historic designed landscape containing and surrounding Dungeness Mansion, located at the southern end of Cumberland Island. The property is within the boundaries of the Cumberland Island National Seashore, a unit of the National Park Service located off of the southeastern coast of Georgia. The Dungeness Mansion CLI explains the historic importance of the property, as well as recounts the historic events that took place on the property from 1560 through 2008. However, the most important time period for the property was 1803-1916 (period of significance), when the Carnegie Family owned and lived at Dungeness Mansion. The Dungeness Mansion CLI compares historic conditions and existing conditions to determine the site’s historic integrity. The intact landscape characteristics that greatly contribute to the site’s historic integrity are spatial organization, vegetation, buildings and structures, circulation, views and vistas, small-scale features, topography, natural systems and features, land use, and archeological sites. The approved treatment plan for the Dungeness Historic District is preservation, as outlined by the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Preservation.
