Carrell Peach Orchard Ground Cover Study Preliminary Report

Alston D, Reeve J, Thomsen E, Ransom C, Black B. Carrell Peach Orchard Ground Cover Study Preliminary Report. Research Permit and Reporting System

Leguminous (alfalfa) ground cover plots were established in the Carrell Peach Orchard in Capitol Reef NP in 2012 and 2013. Heavy foraging by a nearby yellow bellied marmot colony greatly reduced the alfalfa stand in the tilled plot. So far, the marmots have not fed heavily on alfalfa plants in the no-til plot. Preliminary results for effects of orchard ground cover on soil and tree nutrition, weed competition, and arthropod diversity and abundance are discussed.
