Soil Tests Yorktown Fields

Consists of soil test reports from Virginia Tech Soil Testing Laboratory and information on fields available for haying in Yorktown. The documentation includes a number of maps. One series details soil sample collection sites from 1991 in the Yorktown fields. The other series defines the fields available for haying in Yorktown, including the available number of acres and brief descriptions of the dominant vegetation. Other maps indicate which fields are infested with Johnson Grass, and historical usage of the fields in 1964 and 1979. Correspondence includes a memorandum from the Colonial natural resource management specialist to the district conservationist titled "Open Field Planning," dated 12/18/1990, intend "to provide input on recommended ways of maintaining the open fields of Yorktown Battlefield and Tour road, and Green Springs." The district conservationist (Anthony Pane) sent the natural resource management specialist (Charles Rafkind) a copy of the Colonial National Historical Park open land suitability for agriculture report on 02/11/1991 (Reference Code 87798). Charles Rafkind wrote an update on the open fields management planning to Gene Daniels on 11/08/1989. A number of hand-written notes are also included in the documents.
