LACL Vegetation- Racine- 1978

This is a data set of the vegetation types and general land cover of Lake Clark National Park and Preserve. It is a digital version of a paper map created by Charles H. Racine from the 1978 publication "Ecosystems of the Proposed Lake Clark National Park, Alaska: Results of The Center for Northern Studies 1976 ecosystem survey." by Charles H. Racine and Steven B. Young. The original map data was obtained from ground field studies during the summer of 1976 with supplemental information gained through the interpretation of 1:250,000 LANDSAT color infrared imagery and 1:5000 black and white aerial photography. Vegetation and land cover classification boundaries were digitized at 1:35,000 from a scanned image of the original 1:250,000 map. Eight major vegetation land cover classes were determined by Racine and Young and map polygons were often given compound symbol designations when a polygon is comprised of two classes of map units too small to be mapped individually. The symbol for the areally more important type is listed first. A ninth class of "Unk" (Unknown) was added by NPS, SWAN for when the vegetation cover was not defined on the original map. Future research should endeavor to define the dominant land cover of these unknown areas.
