YUCH Vegetation- Racine- 1976

This is a data set of the vegetation types and general land cover of Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve. It is a digital version of a paper map created by Charles H. Racine in 1975 as the vegetation aspect of the 1976 publication "The Environment of the Yukon-Charley Rivers Area Alaska." At the time, the Yukon-Charley Rivers Area was a proposed national preserve so the boundary of the map/data collected is not consistant with the current boundary of the preserve.The original map data was obtained from ground field studies during the summer of 1974-75 with supplemental information gained through the interpretation of 1:250,000 LANDSAT color infrared imagery. Vegetation and land cover classification boundaries were digitized at 1:40,000 from a scanned image of the original 1:250,000 map. Nine major vegetation land cover classes were determined by Racine and Young and map polygons were often given compound symbol designations when a polygon is comprised of two classes of map units too small to be mapped individually. The symbol for the areally more important type is listed first. A tenth class of "Unk" (Unknown) was added by NPS, SWAN for when the vegetation cover was not defined on the original map. "Unk" was also used if the digitizer was unsure of a boundary or vegetation type. Future research should endeavor to define the dominant land cover of these unknown areas.
