This document contains a brief progress report for landbird monitoring conducted in 2011 in riparian habitats in Point Reyes National Seashore and Golden Gate National Recreation Area as part of the National Park Service’s Inventory and Monitoring Project, and following protocols established for this purpose (Gardali et al. 2010). Monitoring was conducted by PRBO Conservation Science (formerly Point Reyes Bird Observatory) at 15 locations within the parks using one or both of two methods, point counts and mist netting. Point count surveys were conducted during the breeding season of 2011, while mist netting was conducted during the breeding season and fall migration at four sites and also during winter at two sites. Of the 132 bird species detected, 31 were California Partners in Flight Focal Species, and 5 were also California Bird Species of Special Concern. Site narratives were updated to reflect changes in vegetation and other environmental factors. Public outreach is an important component of PRBO’s mist netting programs; a total of 701 members of the public viewed mist netting at these sites between 1 May 2011 and 30 April 2012 through organized class visits, and many more as drop-in visitors. A separate Analysis and Synthesis Report (Humple and Porzig 2014) examines patterns at these study sites from 1997-2011, whereas this progress report details the activities to date and basic summaries for 2011.
