The affect of climate on the water level of Crater Lake

The climate of Southern Oregon is one of the most important factors affecting the natural environment of Crater Lake. It is usually cool and snowy during winter and mild and dry in summer. Some winters are wetter than others are. The total snowfall for the winter of 1998-99 has exceeded the 60-year average. This abundant snowfall directly affects the way we see the lake. The annual precipitation determines what level the lake will have. Over the centuries, abundant snowfall and minimal run-off have produce at lake of exception depth, purity and clarity, and color. Only the geologic forces that built and later destroyed the summit of Mount Mazama have had more influence on the appearance of the landscape.
