Researchers have sampled the lake water for its content many times this century. Between 1896 and 1955, most sudies consisted of short-term evaluation of selected physical, chemical, and biological features. It was not until the 10-year study began in 1982 that comprehensive program was undertaken. The lake's isolation and unique physical properties create an opportunity of aquatic organisms to survive in a nearly pristine environment. The clarity of the pure lake water permits light to reach depths normally not seen in other high elevation lakes. What effects this has on lake species has been investigated by scientist in detail during and since a 10-study project began.
