Britten, and L. O’Gan. 2013. Rocky Mountain Network wetland ecological integrity monitoring protocol: Narrative, version 1.0. Natural Resource Report NPS/ROMN/NRR—2014/XXX. National Park Service, Fort Collins, Colorado. The Wetlands (WEI) protocol was developed through the integration and adaptation of the approaches of several other national inventory programs and through rigorous field testing. The primary objectives of the WEI protocol are to: 1. Document the status and trend in wetland condition. 2. Understand the causes of change in wetland condition. 3. Assist in the application of WEI results and relevant auxiliary information to park wetland management. The purpose of the ROMN inventory and monitoring program is to provide scientifically credible, long-term ecological information for natural resource protection and management through natural resource inventories and monitoring of vital signs of ecosystem health. Having this information will allow park managers and scientists to assess the efficacy of management practices and restoration efforts and receive early warning of impending threats to the resources and systems that the NPS was created to protect. In this way, the I&M program helps the NPS to fulfill its mission “to conserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the national park system for the enjoyment of this and future generations.” A long-term goal of the Network is to develop quantitative methods to assess ecosystem integrity and health through the development of bioassessment models that will incorporate reference condition distributions and identify both temporal and spatial departures from these distributions within a park.
