A feasibility study of the benefits and impacts of restoring bison to Agate Fossil Beds National Monument. Agate Fossil Beds National Monument is located in western Nebraska. Assuming 2,676 acres are available to bison, the park could support 166 bison in the fall in a normal-precipitation year, or about 136 yearlings and adults. The potential benefits of restoring bison include: 1) restoring a native species, 2) restoring an ecological process, 3) improving visitor experience, 4) benefitting local communities via increased tourism, 5) restoring a Native American cultural resource, 6) contributing to DOI and NPS goals, 7) contributes to agency and global conservation of bison genetic diversity, 8) establishing a genetically pure bison herd, 9) establishing a satellite herd, 10) a repository for Yellowstone bison.
