National Capital Region Inventory and Monitoring Network American Chestnut Inventory. In FY2014, NCRN inventoried surviving American chestnut trees (Castanea dentata) throughout the region. We tagged each tree, recorded species identification, location coordinates, estimated height, number of stems, condition (including presence of blight/cankers), and reproductive status. We also recorded Chinkapins (C. pumila), and Chinese chestnut (C. mollissima). Several land management agencies and non-profit organizations in the National Capital Region have been considering restoration of chestnuts by using hybrid chestnuts. These hybrids are being produced by the American Chestnut Foundation and are the result of breeding American and Chinese chestnuts. The goal of this assessment was to determine the current status and distribution of American chestnuts in NCR and habitat preferences. This information may aid parks in determining restoration areas if they choose to plant hybrid chestnuts. This activity was funded by NCR Regional Block Grant funding and was implemented by interns from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
