Kilauea Military Camp (KMC) is located on the Island of Hawaii, high atop Kilauea, on the slopes of Mauna Loa, in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park (HAVO). KMC is operated by the Department of Defense, under its Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) program, occupying approximately 52.7 acres of the park's 333,000 acres. Established in 1916, the military recreation camp is located off of Crater Rim Drive approximately two and one-half miles west from the main entrance into the park on the north rim of the Kilauea caldera. The boundaries of KMC include the entirety of the KMC developed area between Highway 11 and Crater Rim Drive. Kilauea Military Camp is significant at a state level under Criterion A and at a local level under Criterion C. The military camp is historically significant at the state-level for its role as a U.S. military recreation facility in Hawaii and is significant at a local level for its adaptations of the Plantation-style of architecture as well as military site development that was influenced by concepts of city planning as well as NPS rustic and naturalistic design. The period of significance for the historic district begins when construction began on site in 1916 and extends to 1947 when the last consolidated large-scale construction effort was completed at the camp.
