This paper considers the generalization that neoteny in the male is a characteristic of the genus Emerita. For each species the published and unpublished data are assembled which deal with three aspects of the problem: the size of the males and females and their growth patterns, the age at sexual maturity and the relative role in mating of the males of different size.
