Ecology of the California Acmaea: Avery Ransome (Grant) Test

Test AR. 1945. Ecology of the California Acmaea: Avery Ransome (Grant) Test. Ecology. 26:395-405

Except for an occasional isolated bit of information, the literature is almost entirely devoid of ecological material on species of the genus Acmaea, the only notable exception being the work of Hewatt ('37)/ It therefore seems desirable to set forth the results of a study of several years duration. This study was more extensive in scope than suggested by this paper, and developed into an attempt to unravel some of the mysteries of specialization in this group (Test, 45b). It is to be hoped that other students of this group will be persuaded to contribute their observations also, to provide eventually a greater understanding of the ecology of the genus wherever species may be found. It is a firm belief of mine that only when the ecology is known will the taxonomy of the species be thoroughly understood.
