Natural Resource Inventory and Monitoring, Base Cartography Inventory.

The Base Cartography inventory is one of 12 core inventories identified by the National Park Service as essential to effectively manage park natural resources. Base cartographic information from this inventory provides geographic information systems (GIS) data layers to National Park resource management staff, researchers, and research partners. This inventory was focused on acquiring digital cartographic data layers upon which spatial data applications and analyses are based. Base cartographic inventory products are used by the National Park Service and others for many different applications, ranging from making maps, to spatial data verification, to designing monitoring sampling frameworks. While the initial scope of this inventory was to acquire and store the digital spatial data files, this need has been eliminated by the advent of on-line access to legacy and current data sets, provided by the USGS and the US Department of Agriculture. As a result, the legacy digital files corresponding to this inventory have been removed from the Data Store and have been replaced with external links directing the user to comprehensive on-line data sources. In addition to the links provided in this record, uncompressed NAIP DOQQs can be obtained from NPS regional GIS coordinators, or requested via email at irma@nps.gov.
