Petrology and geochemistry oif Mesoproterozoic basement rocks, Blue Ridge Parkway, Virginia. Research Permit and Reporting System

Geologic field studies of Precambrian basement rocks were undertaken in the northern section of the Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP) in June and July 2014, followed by ongoing analytical investigations. The overall Mesoproterozic age, charnockitic affinity, and tholeiitic geochemical characteristics of the BRP basement rocks are similar to comparable basement in Shenandoah National Park, suggesting that Mesoproterozoic rocks in both areas constitute parts of a similar regional crustal block.
