Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont (GSMIT) monitors lichens as an indicator of air quality. This is a citizen science project with data collected over many years by people of various ages and experience levels. Coverage of the main growth forms of lichen (fruiticose, foliose, and crustose) are monitored in two plots, each containing six trees.
