Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont (GSMIT) monitors aquatic salamander populations in streams around Tremont using transects of leaf litter bags placed in five streams. Citizen scientists of varying ages and level of expertise check each leaf litter bag for salamanders, identify the salamander, make some measurements and release the individual. Several environmental parameters are also collected including temperature and pH of the stream.
