Geologic hazards and rapid geomorphic change are significant to both the history and future ofBandelier National Monument (BAND). The monument encompasses an area of steep walled, deeplyincised canyons, an active seismic zone, and is located on the flank of an active volcanic system, theValles Caldera. Following the 2011 Las Conchas Fire, which burned a significant part of watershedson the flank of the Valles Caldera, park managers became concerned about increasing rates ofgeomorphic change including, stream bank erosion, aggradation, flooding, debris flows, and rockfall.
