A guide to Graphic Documentation, part of the Landscape Lines series from the Park Cultural Landscapes Program. Line drawing, photography, and videography are techniques used for graphically documenting cultural landscapes. Line drawings such as measured plans, sections, elevations, and black and white photographs are used in Cultural Landscape Reports (CLRs) as an accurate graphic recording of a landscape's appearance at a particular time. Diagrams, sketches, maps, and charts may also be used, reproduced from contemporary or historic material. Color slides or video provide additional graphic documentation. Throughout the CLR, these different formats supplement narrative description and documentation of the landscape. The specific format of graphic content may depend on what section of the report it is used for and how the documentation functions in site history, analysis, or proposed treatment. This document provides a more detailed explanation of these types of graphic documentation and their purposes within the CLR.
