A guide to Surveys, part of the Landscapes Lines series from the Park Cultural Landscapes Program. Several types of surveys may be needed to conduct historical research and existing conditions investigations for a Cultural Landscape Report (CLR). Generally, the two primary surveys are a site survey and a topographic survey. A site survey graphically documents findings of a site investigation, and the topographic survey accurately records existing conditions in preparation for planning efforts. Other types of surveys provide site-specific information and are conducted in accordance with the CLR project agreement. This guidance document describes the most relevant types of surveys, their purpose in a CLR, and the expertise required to perform them.
