This document presents an initiative that is dedicated to fostering a transformation in land development and management practices, aiming to bring the essential importance of ecosystems to the forefront. For the Sustainable Sites Initiative, land practices are defined as sustainable if they enable natural and built systems to work together to "meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." This document presents the guiding principles that will inform the work of the Sustainable Sites Initiative, as well as all aspects of sustainable site development. The central message of the Initiative is that any landscape - from a park, to a large shopping mall, to a single home - holds the potential to both improve and regenerate the natural benefits and services provided by ecosystems in their undeveloped state.
