Invasive species management for Katmai National Park & Preserve, Alagnak Wild River, and Aniakchak National Monument & Preserve: 2014 summary report

The 2014 Katmai Exotic Plant Management Team marks the fifth season that the Alaska Exotic Plant Management Team protocol for surveying and controlling invasive plants was followed throughout the growing season. The majority of field work focused on manual and chemical treatment of known infestations at Brooks Camp, the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes Road, Lake Camp, Fure’s Cabin, Nonvianuk ranger cabin, and government property in King Salmon. The team applied Milestone VM herbicide to treat common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale ssp. officinale) at Fure’s Cabin, Nonvianuk cabin, and Lake Camp. It was also used to treat fall dandelion (Leontodon autumnalis), sheep sorrel (Rumex acetosella), and pineappleweed (Matricaria discoidea) at Lake Camp, as these infestations were either too large to effectively control manually, in difficult areas to access, or did not respond well to manual treatment. Manual control has proven successful for moderately-sized infestations, such as the Brooks Camp cultural site. Katmai National Park and Preserve has a relatively narrow extent and limited severity of invasive plants compared to infestations in other parts of Alaska or the contiguous United States due to the park’s remote location and continual efforts by several Exotic Plant Management Teams. Ongoing and future construction projects at Brooks Camp will disturb existing vegetation. Revegetation plans will be necessary to ensure that the newly-exposed areas are restored post-construction.
