Phylogeography and systematics of the red salamander (Pseudotriton ruber)

Phylogeography and systematics of the red salamander (Pseudotriton ruber). Research Permit and Reporting System

No systematic study to date has tested the validity of the four subspecies of Pseudotriton ruber. We sequenced regions of the genome from across the distribution of P. ruber and used phylogenetic methods to test the monophyly of these taxa. Our phylogenies recovered five genetic clades but subspecies were not monophyletic. One genetic clade was consistently basal in phylogeneny, exhibited distinct haplotypes, and had the highest divergence; we propose that this population is a distinct species.
