Cultural Resource Survey of Eight Areas Proposed for Resource Activities Within the Olympic National Forest, Washington

This report presents the methods and results of a cultural resource survey of eight parcels of land proposed for resource activities and land exchanges within the Olympic National Forest, Washington. This survey was designed to identify and provide an evaluation of all historic and prehistoric cultural resources within project boundaries, and to recommend appropriate mitigation measures. Prior to the field survey, an archival investigation was conducted to provide information on cultural resource locations within project boundaries as well as information on the environment, prehistory, and history of the region. The field survey was conducted between October 10 and November 12, 1980. As a result of this survey, 26 historic archaeological sites were recorded including trails, bridges, remains of logging activity, an orchard, and numerous structures. Of the cultural resources identified, only the Lake Quinault Lodge appeared to be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. It was recommended that this structure be nominated to the National Register and that it be places, with all other identified resources, on the Forest Service inventory. It was also recommended that numerous trails and the CCC Kitchen be maintained and that a conservation zone be placed around the Skokomish Trail and all identified structures when logging. In addition, several architectural recommendations were made for the Lake Quinault Lodge and the Lodge Annex.
